What is Yoga Therapy?

Yoga therapy isn’t an end result. It’s a practice of remembering wholeness.

Yoga therapy is a personalized, therapeutic relationship rooted in ancient wisdom and modern science. It meets you exactly where you are—with your body, your history, your hope, your healing—and offers a path home to balance.

At Pranayoga, we define yoga therapy as a practice of compassionate presence and intelligent care. We combine the tools of yoga—movement, breathwork, meditation, and mindfulness—with the systems of Ayurveda and trauma-informed science to support the whole person.

According to the International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT), yoga therapy is:

“the process of empowering individuals to progress toward improved health and well-being through the application of the teachings and practices of yoga.”

It’s less about touching your toes and more about touching what’s true.

While many styles of yoga can be therapeutic...
Yoga therapy is quite different.

It is intentional, clinical, and collaborative. A certified yoga therapist has in-depth training to understand specific health challenges, body systems, and therapeutic adaptations.

Rather than following a general class structure, yoga therapy is tailored care—offering you practices that directly support your unique physical, mental, and emotional needs.

What Makes Yoga Therapy Unique?
Client-Centered: You’re not a passive participant; you’re an empowered partner in your healing process.

Customized for You: Yoga therapy addresses specific conditions like chronic pain, anxiety, trauma, or hormonal shifts with targeted tools and guidance.

Whole-Person Care: It integrates the body, breath, mind, and spirit—not just as concepts, but as active components of healing.

Supports Other Healing Paths: Whether you’re in recovery, on medication, or in psychotherapy, yoga therapy offers complementary support.

In my book, The Path of Joyful Living, I wrote about how yoga helped me heal from anxiety, addiction, and disconnection.
Not in an instant. Not with a single class.
But through consistent support, nervous system repair, and the sacred space to feel and unfold.

Yoga therapy gives you that space.
It honors that healing is not linear, and it invites you into a new relationship with yourself—one that’s rooted in presence, resilience, and kindness.

Who Can Benefit from Yoga Therapy?

-People living with chronic pain, fatigue, autoimmune or hormonal imbalances

-Those moving through anxiety, grief, trauma, or burnout

-Anyone seeking recovery, embodiment, or peace after a life transition

-Healthcare workers, teachers, mothers, caretakers—those who give so much and need a space to receive

Whether you want to move more freely, breathe more deeply, sleep more soundly, or simply feel like yourself again—yoga therapy is a place to begin.
